How to collect customer data at your store without an app
Five ways to capture customer phone numbers and purchase history at the counter, ranked by how little friction they add.
You cannot bring a customer back if you do not know who they are. But asking for details at a busy counter kills the moment, and almost nobody fills a form. Here are five ways to capture a customer, ranked by how little they ask of the person in front of you.
1. Read it from the payment
The lightest touch of all. When a customer pays by card, wallet, or UPI, the payment rail can hand you a stable identity: a tokenized card globally, or a phone number through UPI in India. Enrollment happens in the background while the receipt prints. The customer does nothing extra.
2. A QR at the counter
A small QR on the table or by the till opens a pre-filled WhatsApp message. One tap to send and they have joined, with their consent on record. It works on any phone and needs no typing.
3. A one-tap opt-in link
Put a link in your receipt, your Google review reply, or your Instagram bio. The customer taps, agrees once, and is enrolled. Useful for reaching people after they have already left.
4. A number or a missed call
For customers without a smartphone, take a number at the counter or let them give a missed call to your line. It is the fallback that makes sure nobody is left out of the program.
5. Sync your POS or biller
The richest option. Connecting your point of sale pulls in what each customer actually ordered. That item-level history is what turns a generic message into a line about their usual order.
- Lead with the payment-linked path; it has the least friction
- Always capture consent, whichever way they join
- Aim for purchase detail, not just a phone number
- Never buy or rent lists; earned data performs better and stays legal
